The gable end brickwork to this end of terraced property in Whitstable was bowing out by 30mm in position.
On inspection no lateral restraint was seen to retain and tie the gable end apex brickwork back to the timber structure of the roof. Existing Cavity Wall Ties were also failing due to corrosion.
This is a very common defect.
New replacement cavity wall ties were installed to the whole elevation.
Lateral restraint was then provided by inserting lengths of threaded bar from the outside of the property cutting into the roof rafters as well as the ceiling joists and floor joists.
Once the ties were installed the end was resined into the brick face to provide a permanent fixing.
These ties then utilise the weight and rigidity of the roof and flooring to retain the wall in its position.
